- The Indian government has decided to increase the percentage of large dams under Dam Safety Rehabilitation and Improvement Project project(DRIP) to 13%. At present, 4% of dams are under the project.
- The project was launched in 2012 by the Central Water Commission (CWC) under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation. It is a World Bank assisted project.
- The DRIP projects seeks to a) improve the safety and operational performance of selected existing dams and associated appurtenances in a sustainable manner and b) improve institutional capacities for dam safety evaluation and implementation at the Central and State levels.
- The Central Dam Safety Organization of Central Water Commission has been entrusted with coordinating and supervising the project implementation.
