US lawmakers introduce legislation to protect H-4 visa workers
1 .US House of Representatives have introduced a legislation to protect work authorization of H-4 visa holders. This comes at a time when the Trump administration has announced plans to overturn current DHS regulations that allow certain H-4 dependent spouses ofH1-B visa holders who are stuck in Green Card backlogs to obtain employment authorisation.
2. H-4 visas are issued to the spouses of H1-B visa holders while H-1B programme offers temporary US visas that allow companies to hire highly skilled foreign professionals working in areas with shortages of qualified American workers.
3. 2015 rule issued by the Obama administration allows work permits for spouses. DHS (Department of Homeland security) had extended eligibility for employment authorisation to H-4 visa holders recognising the economic burdens of families of many H-1B workers
4. More than one lakh H-4 visa holder Indians are major beneficiary of this provision
