The Centre has announced the creation of a
separate railway zone in Andhra Pradesh. The new zone
would be named South Coast Railway (SCoR). The headquarters of the new zone will
be in Vishakhapatnam.
As per item 8 of Schedule 13 (Infrastructure) of
the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Indian Railways was required to
examine establishing a new railway zone in the Andhra Pradesh. The act provided
for the reorganisation of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It carved out a separate
state called Telangana from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
The new zone would comprise the existing
Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions. Additionally, the Waltair division
would be bifurcated. At present, Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal divisions are
in the South Central Railway and Waltair division is in the East Coast Railway.
At present, there are 16 railway zones in India.
