- The Attukal Pongala has begun in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The Attukal Pongala festival is held annually in Attukal Bhagvati Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The temple is popularly known as the “Women Sabarimala”.
- Pongala, which means ‘to boil over’, is the ritual in which women prepare sweet payasam and offer it the main deity ‘Bhagavathy’, also referred to as ‘Attukalamma’. The festival is a 10 days festival which falls during Malayalam month of Kumbham.
- In 2009, the Attukal Pongala festival entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gathering of women.
