Ganga pollution rise claim unscientific

  1. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has rejected the claims of Sankat Mochan Foundation, a Varanasi based registered society committed to clean River Ganga. The society had reported substantial increase in level of pollutants in Ganga.
  2. NMCG is the implementation wing of the National Ganga Council.  It was registered as a under the Societies Registration Act 1860. The government through the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016, declared NMCG as an Authority. It has been powers to issue directions and also to exercise the powers under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
  3. Previously, NMCG was the implementation wing of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA). In 2016, NGRBA was replaced by National Council for River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management), also known as National Ganga Council. The council has the overall responsibility for superintendence of pollution prevention and rejuvenation of river Ganga Basin.
  4. The NMCG implements the Namami Gange programme. The Namami Gange is an Integrated Conservation Mission which seeks effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of River Ganga.
