India inks contract for 72,000 assault rifles

  1. India has signed a contract with a US firm under fast track procurement (FTP) for 72,400 Assault rifles. The assault rifles will replace the Indian National Small Arms System (INSAS) rifles.
  2. Fast Track Procedure (FTP) was promulgated by the Ministry of Defence in 2001. The objective of the procedure is to ensure expeditious procurement for urgent operational requirements for the armed forces.
  3. The government has also issued Expression of Interest (EoI) for a deal to buy naval utility helicopters which would replace Chetak fleet of helicopters. This is the first project under India’s strategic partnership policy. Under this, an Indian private company would collaborate with the Original Equipment Manufacturer to build the defence product in India.
