NRIs to get Aadhaar sans 180-day wait in 3 months

  1. Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) has said that Non Resident Indians(NRIs) with Indian passports will be able to obtain Aadhar Card without the mandatory 180 days waiting period.
  2. Under current regulations,the Non Resident Indian(NRIs) can apply for Aadhaar card only if he or she has stayed in India for at least 182 days in the last 12 months.
  3. Further,the UIDAI has also started setting up Aadhaar Seva Kendras — similar to the concept of Passport Seva Kendras.
  4. These Aadhaar Seva Kendras are meant to facilitate enrolment, updation and other activities.It will be owned and operated by UIDAI.
  5. These Kendra’s will be in addition to other centres currently being run by banks and post offices and in government premises offering similar Aadhaar services.
  6. The UIDAI is a statutory authority established under the provisions of Aadhaar Act 2016 under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.It is mandated to issue Unique Identification numbers (UID)-“Aadhaar” to all residents of India.
  7. The Aadhaar number is a verifiable twelve-digit unique identity number issued by the UIDAI to the residents of India.It is linked with the resident’s demographic and biometric information.
