Taliban demands new Afghan Constitution

  1. The Taliban has demanded a new Constitution for Afghanistan, in a meeting held in Moscow, between the Taliban and Afghan Opposition Parties.
  2. For Taliban, current Afghan Constitution is a Western import and is an obstacle to peace. The new Afghan Constitution would be based on “inclusive Islamic system” and would be drafted by Islamic scholars.
  3. Last week Taliban also held talks with US negotiators in Doha, Qatar, in which Afghan government was not included.
  4. Taliban government was ousted from Afghanistan by US in 2001 but Taliban, through its strikes, has been gaining ground in Afghanistan gradually. After the proposed US withdrawal from Afghanistan, the accommodation of Taliban in Afghan polity has become imminent for long term peace.
