- The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has organised a “Regional Conference on Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS) at Kolkata.
- DDRS aims to a) create an enabling environment to ensure equal opportunities, equity, social justice and empowerment of persons with disabilities and b) encourage voluntary action for ensuring effective implementation of the People with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities and Protection of Rights) Act of 1995. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 has replaced the erstwhile Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. The new law seeks to protect disabled persons in India from various forms of discrimination. It also seeks to ensure their access to equal employment opportunities, and enhances their societal participation
- Under DDRS, NGOs are provided with financial assistance for running their projects for the rehabilitation of persons with disability. Projects include Special school, pre-school and early intervention, Halfway Homes and Community Based Rehabilitation etc.
