N. Korea asks Trump to ignore critics

  1. US President and North Korean leader are going to meet for a second summit in Vietnam.
  2. The first summit was held at Singapore where they had pledged to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
  3. The US administration is persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons programme, which, combined with its missile capabilities, pose a threat to the United States before North Korea can expect any concessions.
  4. The North Korea wants (a) security guarantees for its current regime and (b) formal end of the 1950-1953 Korean War, which ended in a truce, not a treaty.Unlike a formal peace treaty, a truce is a legally non-binding document and a treaty would represent a symbolic end to the Korean War, which was halted only with an armistice.
