The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality
and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has complimented the Odisha government for
proposing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. UN Women is the UN entity working for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
In 2018, the Odisha Assembly had passed a
resolution by unanimous voice vote for providing 33% reservation for women in
Legislative Assemblies and Parliament.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Eighth
Amendment) Bill, 2008 (commonly known as Women Reservation Bill) seeks to
reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state
legislative assemblies. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in
2010 but is still pending in Lok Sabha.
