- The recent heavy rainfall and hailstorms in Punjab and Haryana has damaged standing wheat crops and could also lead to a delay in harvesting of the wheat. Punjab and Haryana are key wheat producing states in India.
- Wheat is the main Rabi crop in India. It is sown between late October and December; while the harvesting starts from April onwards. The Rabi cropping season extends from October-March (winter).
- In India, there are two major cropping seasons: a) Kharif (July –October) and b) Rabi. Another cropping season is Zaid i.e. summer season (March to June).
